When it comes to improving the design and outcome of development projects, we believe the best results are achieved by being proactive. This means questioning design assumptions early in the implementation process so teams on the ground are dealing with the current situation rather than the one that existed when the project was originally proposed!

To carry out monitoring and evaluation (M&E) data analysis, we have developed a number of analytical frameworks and methodologies that can be tailored to suit different activities. Chief amongst these is our Analysis of Development Impact (ADI) study.

An ADI is a litmus test for development projects. It is carried out during implementation and provides a detailed snapshot of:

• what the project is trying to achieve
• how the team is achieving its goals
• how M&E systems can be improved.

By revising existing M&E frameworks and then giving management teams simple and practical tools to move forward, our ADI helps to ensure development aid is delivered effectively. Importantly, it also shows development teams that M&E can be simple and practical, and that it is invaluable for project management and impact assessment.
